Bergamot essential oil that contains bergapten (a furanocoumarin) is phototoxic. This means it can cause serious skin irritation or burns if applied to the skin and then exposed to UV light (sunlight or tanning beds).
Avoid sun exposure for at least 12 hours after topical application unless you’re using a bergapten-free (FCF) version.
Kids: Safe diluted (age 2+). Avoid direct sunlight for 12 hours after topical use.
Pets: Use with caution — can irritate cats and dogs if diffused in unventilated areas.
Pregnancy: Generally safe for diffusion after 1st trimester; avoid internal use.
