What is Sage Smudging?
Sage smudging stick is a ceremonial and spiritual tool traditionally used by various Indigenous cultures, particularly among Native American communities. The dried sage leaves bundled together and tied with a string. The practice of smudging involves lighting the sage bundle and allowing it to smolder, producing fragrant smoke. This smoke is believed to carry spiritual and cleansing properties to cleanse and purify a space, object, or person.
The primary herb used for smudging is typically white sage (Salvia apiana) in Native American traditions. However, other herbs such as cedar, sweetgrass, and palo santo are also used in different cultural practices for specific purposes.
Here’s how you can use sage smudges:
1. Gather Your Supplies
You’ll need:
- A sage smudge stick
- A fireproof bowl, abalone shell, or incense burner
- A lighter
- A feather to waft the smoke (optional)
2. Ventilate the Space
Open windows or doors to let the smoke carry away negative energy and invite fresh air in.
3. Set Your Intention
Before lighting the sage, take a moment to focus on your intention. You can say a prayer, affirmation, or simply set a clear mental focus on what you want to cleanse or invite (e.g., peace, positivity, protection).
4. Light the Sage Stick
Hold one end of the sage bundle at a 45-degree angle and light it with a match or lighter. Let it burn for about 10-15 seconds, then gently blow out the flame. The bundle should start to smolder, releasing smoke.
5. Smudge Your Space
Starting at the front door, walk clockwise around your space, holding the smudge stick and letting the smoke fill the room. You can use a feather or your hand to direct the smoke towards areas you want to cleanse. Focus on corners, doorways, and windows where stagnant energy may accumulate.
6. Smudge Yourself (Optional)
If you want to cleanse your own energy, start by wafting the smoke around your body, beginning from your head and moving down to your feet. Use your hand or a feather to guide the smoke.
7. Smudge Objects (Optional)
If cleansing an object (e.g., crystals, jewelry, furniture), hold it in the smoke for a few seconds while setting your intention.
8. Extinguish the Sage Stick
When you’re done, gently press the burning end of the sage stick into a fireproof bowl, sand, or a holder to fully extinguish it. Never leave burning sage unattended.
9. Store the Sage Stick
Make sure the sage stick is completely out before storing it. Store the stick in a dry place. If your living place is relatively high in humidity, dry the sage stick under sunlight occasionally.

If you are having trouble getting your sage to stay lit, there are a few things you can try to improve the burning process:
- If your sage leaves are not completely dry, they may not burn properly. Try drying your sage leaves under sunlight for a day before using them for smudging.
- Use a jet-flame (windproof) lighter or matches: If you are using a candle to light your sage, the flame may not be strong enough to ignite the leaves. Try using a jet-flame lighter or matches instead.
- Hold the sage at a 45-degree angle: Hold the sage smudge at a 45-degree angle and light it from the top, allowing the flame to travel down the leaves. Make sure the sage is fully ignited before blowing out the flame and using the smudge.
- Use a charcoal disk: You can also use a charcoal disk to burn your sage. Simply light the charcoal disk until it is red-hot, place it in a heat-resistant dish, and then add your loose sage leaves on top of the charcoal.
